Thomas Fawcett Hutton – A Scarborough Artist

Thomas Fawcett Hutton was a British artist born in 1867 in Scarborough.

He sadly passed away in 1886 at the young age of 19.

According to the 1871 census, Thomas was living in St Thomas Street, Scarborough.

Thomas was the son of James Hutton, a greengrocer and who was latterly a Mayor of Scarborough from 1888 to 1890.

James owned his greengrocer business in St Thomas Street, Scarborough.

His son Thomas was a student at the celebrated Scarborough School of Art.

This later became Scarborough Technical College.

Thomas studied under Albert Strange who was born in 1855 and died in 1917.

Albert was a famous designer of small cruising yachts who also had a long career in art, exhibiting at the Royal Academy.

As talented artist, Thomas was awarded prizes by the School of Art.

He painted many Scarborough scenes and they still sell well today.

Scarborough Art Gallery features at least one of his paintings.

Thomas’ brother James Alfred, became a GP and a Director of the Scarborough Spa Company.

James Alfred sadly passed away on Christmas Day 1930 of heart disease.

Thomas also passed away very suddenly of the same condition; he lived with his parents at 11 Albemarle Crescent at the time.

The local newspaper, the Scarborough Evening News, dated 14th December 1886, detailed his death in some detail.

Apparently he’s arrange to meet friend John Henry Inskip in the town on the day of his death.

He went to a house in the area, and suffered a fatal heart attack.

Thomas is buried in Manor Road cemetery.

Their father also suffered the same fate. 

Scarborough School of Art opened in 1882 and famous students include Ernest Dade, Ian Hunter, Frank Mason and Harry Watson. 

Thomas was a very accomplished painter for his age, technically accomplished and including incredible details of maritime life.
